J.R. Gray Claims U.S. Nationals Victory as NHRA Pro Mod Delivers Big at Indy
The biggest race of the year delivered a fitting result for the reigning world champion, as J.R. Gray claimed the JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports victory at the Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
The prestigious event at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park marked the eighth race of the 2026 season and, importantly, the second stop in the five-race Road to the Championship.
With one of the strongest Pro Mod fields of the season assembled at Indy, the weekend produced standout performances throughout qualifying before Gray ultimately emerged with the biggest Wally of the year.
Bond dominates qualifying
Justin Bond made the biggest statement of qualifying, charging to a 5.654-second pass at 255 mph to take the No. 1 qualifying position and earn the KTR Top Qualifier Award. His performance also earned him the SRI Performance Showdown, which rewards the driver with the best qualifying performance over the weekend.
Bond's run came at the end of a dramatic final qualifying session.
Tony Wilson produced one of the most memorable runs of the weekend, carrying the front wheels before recording a 5.710 to jump to the No. 3 position despite finishing the run without parachutes.
Moments earlier, reigning champion J.R. Gray had become the first driver of the session into the 5.60s, posting a 5.693 to move into the No. 2 position.
Bond then had the final word, powering to the 5.654 that put him firmly at the top of the field.
The strength of the Indy field was evident throughout the qualifying order, with Mike Stavrinos fourth, Derek Menholt fifth, Billy Banaka sixth, Sidnei Frigo seventh and Lyle Barnett eighth.
Gray rises on race day
When eliminations arrived, Gray showed exactly why he carries the No. 1 on his Camaro.
The Al-Anabi Performance driver worked his way through one of the deepest fields of the season to set up a final-round showdown with Bond — matching the top two qualifiers against each other for the U.S. Nationals title.
In the final, Gray delivered a 5.701 at 252.47 mph to defeat Bond's 5.759 at 251.72 mph and claim one of the most prestigious victories of his career.
For Gray, the Indy victory was particularly significant as the reigning world champion continues his pursuit of back-to-back JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod championships.
The result also added another major chapter to the Road to the Championship, with every round becoming increasingly important as the series heads toward the final three races of the season.
Strong partner presence throughout Indy
The U.S. Nationals was powered by CFH Superchargers and presented by Shelton Insurance, with both partners receiving extensive exposure throughout NHRA's biggest event of the season.
SRI Performance continued its long-standing support of the series through the SRI Performance Showdown, while KTR Performance recognized the weekend's No. 1 qualifier through the KTR Top Qualifier Award.
Away from the racetrack, the Pro Mod merchandise trailer in the midway provided another connection between racers and fans, including autograph sessions throughout the weekend.
The Pro Mod community also came together Saturday evening for the Artivinco Racing Community Dinner, continuing the series' focus on creating an environment that brings racers, partners and their families together beyond the competition itself.
NHRA Pro Mod Series Manager Debbie O'Rourke said Indy demonstrated the continued momentum behind the category.

The championship fight continues
With Indianapolis complete, attention now turns to the remaining rounds of the Road to the Championship.
Gray's U.S. Nationals victory has strengthened his championship challenge, while Bond's runner-up finish and dominant qualifying performance ensured he also left Indianapolis with a major points haul.
With the championship contenders separated by increasingly small margins, the battle for the 2026 JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports championship is far from decided.
If Indy was any indication, the final three races are going to be worth watching.
